A cheaper variant of Mercedes G class SUV launched at Rs 1.5 Crore, the AMG variant is priced at Rs 2.2 Crore
Mercedes Benz has launched the base variant of its G-Class rough and tough SUV, the G350d which will retail at a price tag of Rs 1.5 Crore ex-showroom. This rugged SUV marks the entry-level of the G-class in India and also the first model to come in non-AMG disguise.
Speaking about the design, the G350d is a rugged boxy SUV with tall proportions. The styling is brought down from the AMG G63 SUV which can be seen by the simpler looking front fascia. The alloy wheels on the G350d are 20-inch in diameter which is more than enough for serious off-roading.
On the inside, there is a couple of large 12.3-inch screens – one for the instrument cluster and another one for the infotainment system at the center of the dashboard. Seats are all covered with exceptional quality leather, front seats are power-adjustable, the steering wheel is multi-function too. There is three zone-climate control for extra comfort. LED headlamps and Wipers are all automatic, the SUV has ambient lighting along with other human comfort features.

While the AMG G63 is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol engine which develops massive 585bhp. The G350d, on the other hand, is powered by a 3.0-liter inline 6 cylinder engine which is tuned to produce 286bhp and 600Nm twisting force. The power figure is a lot less than the AMG version but the G350d is not a slow car. This diesel engine is mated to a 9-speed gearbox that channels power to all the 4 wheels. Mercedes Benz G350d can hit the 100 kmph mark in just 7.4 seconds which is remarkable for something which weighs in at 2.5 tons.
There are three locking differentials along with low range gearing and massive 241 mm ground clearance. Water wading capacity stands at 700 mm and it is touted as go-anywhere rugged SUV.
The safety is taken utmost care as the G350d gets 8 airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake assist, Electronic stability program, traction control, limited-slip differential as well as hill start assist.
Being a CBU unit, the G350d is priced at Rs 1.5 crore and is not homologated as per ARAI regulations that any manufacturer can import up to 2500 units per year without homologation. The Mercedes Benz G350d competes with Range Rover Sport, Toyota Land Cruiser LC 200 in the Indian market.
